There's no better way to enjoy winter than to ski on the slopes.The only problem is that it tends to be a bit chilly when it snows, and most of us aren't used to being outside all day.Dress for winter weather is common sense.If you want to stay warm while still staying flexible enough to twist and go downhill, consider these five winter skiing tips.
1) Thin Socks
Our general logic is that the more clothes we wear, the warmer we will be.That's why we wear long-sleeved T-shirts, sweaters, jackets and scarves.The same logic doesn't apply to your feet.Your blood needs to circulate to your feet to keep them warm.
If you wear an extra pair of socks when your feet are already wearing tight boots, it will only make you colder.Wear thin exercise socks.Not only are your feet warmer, they're more comfortable!
2) Keep your batteries alive
Climbing to the top of the mountain is a great photo opportunity.How could you say no?The problem is that cold weather and phone batteries don't mix well.To make matters worse, cell phone reception in the mountains is often not very good, and between the cold and the constant search for a signal, your phone will shut down for a very short time.
Put the phone in an inside pocket close to your body so it stays warm (and has more padding) and put it on airplane mode.When you're at the foot of the hill, you can always check your messages so you can guarantee at least a 90 percent batting average by the end of the day.
3) Stay hydrated
It's easy to remember to drink water when we're sweating, but it's easy to forget to drink water when we're in sub-zero temperatures and surrounded by frozen water (aka snow).But the sun will reflect a very bright light off the surface, and with all that movement, you'll quickly become dehydrated.
Stay hydrated in cold weather and make sure each couple drinks some water as they head down the mountain.You'll have more energy and less pain at the end of the day.
